Nicole Kidman is opening up. The mom of four spoke candidly about the profound challenges of being a mother — and being a daughter — in a revealing new interview with Tatler. Kidman is mom to four children: Isabella, 26, and Connor, 24, adopted with ex Tom Cruise, and daughters Sunday, 11, and Faith, 8, with current husband Keith Urban.

She explained that her grandmother always told her motherhood is “a journey,” with “no right and wrong.” And she said that the matriarch’s advice continues to ring true in her life. “I once got this wonderful advice from my grandmother. She said to me, ‘Every child is given some adversity. Where you’re born. What you’re up against. Your parents get divorced,'” she said during the interview with Tatler, from her home in Nashville. “‘There’s always going to be problems. And the greatest thing is that the love is enough.’ I always try to think that. The love is enough.'”

She also told Tatler that the death of her father in 2014 was a test of her own parenting — and that it forever changed her approach to both motherhood and life overall. “My three year old said, ‘But you’re not going to be sad like this tomorrow, are you?’ That’s when you realize, you know, you have to be OK,” she told Tatler. “‘Because they need to know that they’re safe, that their mother isn’t going to fall apart. Inside? I was beyond shattered. But I had to rally.'”

Her grief, she said, helped her practice being in the moment. “I jumped in to life. Let’s go on a plane. Let’s try things. Let’s go for it. Because who knows, right?” Kidman told Tatler.

Although Kidman rarely posts about her children on social media, she recently shared a photo with her daughter on Instagram. “Sunday walk with Sunday,” Kidman captioned the shot likely taken at her Nashville home. She used the hashtags for #MotherDaughter and #Happiness.

Kidman is busy these days — and not just with parenting. She has five acting projects in various stages of production, she’s producing three of them. This December, the much-anticipated Roger Ailes takedown Bombshell hits theaters, starring Kidman alongside the likes of Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie, Allison Janney, Kate McKinnon, and more powerhouses in the female-dominant cast — a definite must-see!
