Nicolas Cage faces off with admirers and angry mobs in the latest dark comedy from A24, Dream Scenario.

Directed by Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself) and produced by Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau Is Afraid), Cage plays a professor who finds himself in the midst of celebrity after he begins to appear in the dreams of strangers.

The trailer, set to hit Nineties hit single “Dreams” by the Cranberries, sees Cage’s Paul Matthews sifting through hundreds of messages, doing his best Edward Scissorhands impression for media photoshoots, and claiming, “Why me? Uh, I don’t know! I’m special, I guess,” during a television interview.

In one scene, Cage tells his onscreen daughter, “So, I’m finally cool, huh?” before celebrating his “cool dad” status. However, his viral popularity takes a dark turn when the visions of him turn into nightmares, and he’s the imagined culprit behind hammer attacks and assaults. As both friends and strangers start to fear him, Matthews is warned of the “less desirable side effects” of fame.

Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera, Dylan Baker, Kate Berlant, Dylan Gelula, and Tim Meadows also star in the film.

Dream Scenario premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and has since garnered reviews praising Cage’s performance. Rolling Stone’s David Fear called the film “part horror movie and part sideways swipe at cancel culture and social pariahdom,” adding, “Dream Scenario is the sort of high-concept, surreal comedy that Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, and Charlie Kaufman used to do on the regular — think Eternal Nicshine of the Spotless Cage.”
