Nicki Minaj has been tapped to return as host and performer for the 2023 MTV VMA Awards, amid her six nominations. The decorated event, held at New Jersey’s Prudential Center for the second year in a row, will see a slew of stars hit the red carpet on Tuesday, (Sept. 12).

Minaj — who was honored with the coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award last year — will also give a world premiere performance of her latest single, “Last Time I Saw You,” at this year’s show.

The Queen rapper will also witness Sean “Diddy” Combs receive the Global Icon award, as well as Shakira take home the same honor that she did in 2022.

The 6x VMA-winner currently holds the record for winning the most nods in the category of Best Hip Hop. She first won 12 years ago and then again three times thereafter in 2015, 2018, and in 2022 for “Do We Have A Problem” with Lil Baby. Drake is currently in second place with three wins in the category.

This year could be Minaj’s fifth time winning the category as she is nominated for “Super Freaky Girl.” She’s also up for Video of the Year and Best Visual Effects for the aforementioned single, as well as Artist of The Year, Song of The Summer for “Barbie World” featuring Ice Spice, and Best R&B for “Love In The Way” with Yung Bleu.

The veteran spitter also performed a medley of hits last year upon her Vanguard acceptance. With a high-energy all-pink dolled-out set, Minaj delivered her biggest singles, including “Romans Revenge,” “Monster,” “Beez In the Trap,” “Chun-Li,” “Moment For Life,” “Super Bass,” “Anaconda,” and “Super Freaky Girl.”

Minaj gave a speech upon receiving her Vanguard Award that was full of gratitude and reflection.

“Let me tell you something,” she started. “I never ever in my life have written a speech, and today I jotted something down on my phone. First of all, I wanna say to everyone in here, God bless you. I wanna thank the key people that inspired my flow.”

She went on to name her influences and those who gave her big opportunities including Lil’ Wayne, JAY-Z, Kanye West, Foxy Brown, Rihanna, Drake,Beyoncé, and Madonna. Later in the show she added the names Diddy, Fergie, Big Fendi, Taylor Swift, and more to that same list.
