Joe Budden might have let New Jersey down this past week. The controversial podcaster revealed a recent conversation with Nicki Minaj regarding her Pink Friday 2 Tour.

“Nicki hit me last night,” he told his co-hosts during a recent episode of his eponymous podcast. He revealed that she wanted the retired rapper to perform his 2003 hit “Pump It Up,” but he declined. They all went on to clown him for being “pu**y.” Parks reminded him that a club they recently attended played both his and Minaj’s music, and the crowd was into it.

“I thought about it,” he said. Parks asked if he remembered the words to the song, and Budden clarified that knowing the lyrics wasn’t the issue. “It ain’t the words; it’s my body,” he said. “I gotta go out there and act hype. I ain’t hype no more!” He claimed that he didn’t let New Jersey down by making this decision, but people in the comments of The Joe Budden Podcast Instagram disagreed.

“Nah doing Fire in Jersey would be EPIC Joey,” one fan wrote with the fire emoji. “Biggest fumble ever,” another fan wrote. “Joe you be hype AF on that couch. Put the couch on the stage and go do it,” another fan hilariously wrote.

Some people did question whether the song would go over well with Nicki Minaj’s expansive audience. “You guys have to remember. Pump it up ain’t gon hit the same with the young crowd. Trust me and Joe knows this,” one fan wrote. One commenter predicted that this performance would have been easy joke material for one of Budden’s recent rivals. “Nah Drake would of been on his head top,” they wrote.

While Joe declined the invitation, 50 Cent and G-Unit were willing participants when Nicki performed at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening (March 30). They performed “I Get Money,” “In Da Club,” “Wanksta,” and many more records in a nearly 20-minute set. Nicki performed several tracks from her latest album Pink Friday 2 and classic records such as “Save Me,” “Moment 4 Life,” “Itty Bitty Piggy,” and many more.

Joe Budden and Nicki Minaj have a chaotic, hilarious history with one another. In the summer of 2019, Joe and his former co-hosts, Rory and Mal, stopped by Queen Radio. Things got heated and The Joe Budden Podcast crew left midway through the interview.

Later that day, they all reunited to record an episode of the JBP, which was a bit more tame, but still had moments of passion and tension. They spoke about the hate Nicki receives in the media, gatekeepers in Hip-Hop, and Minaj’s thoughts on whether Rick Ross or The Game was a better rapper.

Joe and Nicki have published two more one-on-one interviews within the last three years. As contentious as things can get between them, they seemingly have mutual respect for each other. Maybe Joe will take her up on her next offer to perform on tour, whenever the next one will be.
