Nickelback Didn't Originally Want 'How You Remind Me' to Be a Lead Single

"We just thought it was another song," Nickelback guitarist Ryan Peake says in a new clip from 'Hate to Love: Nickelback'

Nickelback's biggest hit almost wasn't a single at all.

In a new clip from Hate to Love: Nickelback, a documentary film about one of Canada’s most polarizing rock bands, guitarist Ryan Peake opens up about how the group's song "How You Remind Me" could have been just another throwaway track.

"I remember when Chad [Kroeger] came to my house and he said, 'Listen I got this tune. I'm not so sure, you know, but I thought I'll just play it to you.' I heard it and I'm like, 'It sounds like a pretty good song,'" Peake, 50, recalls of "How You Remind Me." "I didn't go all smash hit. I remember my wife was up in the loft of our house and she was like, 'That's a hit.'"

He added: "We just thought it was another song."

According to Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger didn't even want to lead with the song as a single.

"Mike was like, 'Nope, let's go with 'Never Again,'" the rocker recalls.

Once the song went to radio, it was "everywhere," and became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard charts.

Hate to Love: Nickelback, which is directed by Leigh Brooks, is coming to theaters worldwide for two nights only on March 27 and March 30.

According to a press release, the feature-length film "tells the authentic story about the band from their humble beginnings in Hanna Alberta, to their explosive global success in 2001 and the highs and lows that followed."

It also "celebrates the loyalty of Nickelback fans and delves into the years of online vitriol while exposing the personal impact it had on each of the band members."

In an interview with PEOPLE and other media outlets at the Toronto Film Festival in September, which hosted the world premiere of the film, Nickelback's lead singer Chad Kroeger said he wouldn't be weighing in on backlash about the band any longer.

“I’m over it,” the 49-year-old told PEOPLE and other publications.

Peake said that with the documentary they "get to take the narrative."

"We get to actually tell our version—it's like you turn the cheek for as much as you can, and then at some point it's like, here's our take on it,” he added.
