Meet Nick Saban's wife.

The University of Alabama's history-breaking head football coach, who recently announced his retirement after 17 seasons with the Crimson Tide team, is married to Terry Saban.

Having been married for over 50 years, Terry's been by Nick's side throughout his accomplished career — including his six national titles and a 206–29 overall record with Alabama, plus his title win with Louisiana State University in 2003.

Terry, herself, has been immersed and embraced by the Tuscaloosa community throughout her husband's tenure as the Crimson Tide coach. To show her gratitude amid Nick's retirement news, she penned a heartfelt message to them and the state "that will always feel like 'Sweet Home'" to her and her family.

While the longtime couple undoubtedly share a love of football, their love for each other surpasses the gridiron. Terry and Nick's relationship goes way back as they were childhood sweethearts before tying the knot and ultimately starting a family together.

Terry was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, the same hometown as her husband. The couple first met in the seventh grade, a time when Nick recalled she wasn't into him despite his interest in her.

"I've tried to date since I was in the seventh grade. She would never ever date me. She would never ever go out with me," Nick once said of Terry back in the day. He noted that she was into another guy at the time.

Nick blamed it on her social status, in comparison to his own. "She was from the city... She was the Queen Bee [at East Fairmont High], the drum majorette and all that stuff. I just could not get a date," he admitted. "And here I am, the country bumpkin out here pumping gas every day."

It wasn't until high school that Nick said Terry "finally noticed" him. "I finally got a date," he said.

Nick and Terry wed in December 1971. Since then, Nick said she's given him "so much advice through the years" — spanning both on and off the football field.

When Nick first started his coaching career, his temper when speaking with the media wasn't the best. Terry, though, didn't hold back and influenced him to change his oftentimes "angry, nervous and curt" behavior.

"I changed my whole image as a coach and it started with changing my image with the media and the people. It helped in so many ways like recruiting, relationships with players... so that's probably one of the most important lessons she ever gave me."

On Dec. 18, Nick and Terry celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.

The Alabama community has given her a special nickname

Nick and Terry are the parents of two children, a daughter named Kristen and a son named Nicholas, both of whom they adopted.

Kristen often posts her support for Alabama on social media, sharing photos of herself on the sidelines at games. "Happy National Coaches Day to the best coach in the world. No one does it like you, no one fights and works as hard for their team like you do and no one coaches like you. You’re simply the best. #THEGOAT" Kristen wrote in an Instagram tribute to her dad in October 2022.

She confirmed Nick Saban's retirement news

Amid speculation that Nick was retiring as head coach of the University of Alabama football team, Terry confirmed the news with a heartfelt Facebook post. In the message, she bid farewell to the Crimson tide, while cherishing the memories they've made over the past 17 seasons.

“It has been an incredible run these last 17 years at the University of Alabama and we take with us many amazing memories. We hope that the Saban legacy will be about helping others and making a positive difference in people's lives as well as the winning tradition on the field," she began.

Terry went on to explain how she and her husband will uphold their family's nonprofit organization as they "continue to help children, student, and teacher causes in the State of Alabama." She wrapped up her post with a tribute to the game and the state she's called home for so many years.

"The rules for the game of football may change, but the ‘process’ will never go out of style: hard work, discipline, the relentless pursuit of a worthy goal, not cutting corners, and doing things the right way for the sake of constant personal improvement, not for the scoreboard," Terry said.

"Alabama will always feel like 'Sweet Home' to our family, and we'll be cheering ‘Roll Tide’!'" she concluded, signing the letter "Ms. Terry Saban" with a red heart emoji.

Nick and Terry are involved in various philanthropic endeavors, often giving back to the Alabama community. In 1998, they established Nick's Kids Foundation, a non-profit organization of their own founded in honor of Nick's father.

Since then, the Sabans have "maintained and supported" their charity — which is "dedicated to raising awareness and resources for deserving organizations throughout the state of Alabama and the Southeast," according to the foundation's website.

Throughout their careers at LSU, the Miami Dolphins and Alabama, the Sabans have invested their time in hosting golf tournaments, scrimmages and other events to benefit the cause such as their annual Giveaway Luncheon, which "serves to distribute grants to support children, family, teacher and student causes."
