Nick Jonas is opening up about his diabetes

Nick Jonas is getting candid about his Type 1 diabetes diagnosis.

The Jonas Brothers singer, 31, shared a message on Instagram alongside his mother about the four different signs that could lead to a diagnosis. He also added that it was thanks to his family noticing these signs that he was now receiving treatment.

The Instagram Reel Nick shared opened up with Denise Jonas noting that her son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 18 years ago. Nick followed this by saying that he had been experiencing “all the symptoms” including frequent urination, excessive thirst, exhaustion and unexplained weight loss.

“Nick was very enthusiastic as a child,” Denise said. “He was very driven, so when he started to exhibit these signs, I was alarmed, but I think I was in denial.”

In his caption, Nick noted that his family and “especially” his mom “noticed a change in me,” which ultimately led to his diagnosis, despite “the conversation around diabetes” not being as “prevalent as it is now.”

“I was lucky enough to have this incredible support system around me that noticed these signs, helped me make the decision to get checked and ultimately saved my life,” the pop star wrote.

“As a new father myself, I understand how important it is to be on the lookout for these signs as my daughter grows up,” he added. He was referring to daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, 21 months, whom he shares with wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

He also said that they're hoping to spread awareness of Type 1 diabetes.

“So whether you’re a parent or a parental figure in someone’s life or just a big brother or sister, whatever your relationship is, be on the lookout, see those signs, go get checked…,” he shared alongside the link for additional resources at his his diabetes non-profit, beyondtype1.org/seethesigns.

The singer-songwriter has been candid about his health diagnosis for several years, telling PEOPLE in 2021 that it took him a while to get used to dealing with it.

"I had this kind of wrench thrown into things when I was diagnosed and it took a while to figure out how to count carbs to properly dose for insulin and what things would affect me in different ways," Jonas previously said.

He noted after 16 years, he finally had a "fairly good grip on it," but admitted that he wished he had someone to look up to when he was diagnosed at such a young age. He said he now aspires to be that role model for young people with diabetes. "That's my focus," he said.

"When I was first diagnosed, I was sitting in the hospital and was scared to death, honestly, while I was learning about how to manage this new thing I was dealing with," Jonas recalled.

"It would have been amazing to have someone to look at at that time to say, oh, this is a person living with it and they're following their dreams,” he continued. “They're doing what they want to do with their lives and not letting it slow them down."
