Nicholas Hamilton on Filming Stephen King’s ‘It’ Remake
Stephen King’s “It” remake is one of the buzziest horror films, fueled by this week’s reveal of Pennywise.
Variety caught up with one of the stars of the upcoming film, Nicholas Hamilton, at the Power of Young Hollywood event presented by Pixhug. Hamilton, who plays bully Henry Bowers, discussed his growing fan base, remaking the classic horror tale and working with child actors.
“I’m terrified of clowns,” the Australian actor admitted right away. With the reveal of the demonic clown having gone viral, the buzz has been building. “I have never had such a big following on a movie before,” Hamilton admitted. “It’s definitely a big bonus to have that before the movie comes out.”
The actor said he “watched all the bits of my original character” for research and preparation for the role. And, while he hasn’t worked with Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise yet, he has gotten the chance to do inflict some pain of his own.
“There’s stuff that I have to do that is really creepy and the opportunity to help share my psychotic side has been really fun,” said Hamilton. “I recently did a scene where I was working with Jeremy Ray Taylor. I had to terrorize the hell out of him and get right in his face.”
Hamilton added that he has had an “amazing” time and has been learning so much from his co-stars as young as 14.
“If they were any less tolerant, then you would sort of want to hurt them,” he joked. “[Taylor] is so tolerant that he lets me do whatever I want. So if he says, ‘Hey, let’s do this a bit less rough’ or ‘Do this another way,’ then you feel obliged to do it because he’s been so tolerant all the time.”
Production held off on releasing the Pennywise photo until the child actors had seen him first, which they did on Friday when the kids shot their first scene with him.
“I think for the people watching, it’s going to be one of the scariest movies they’ll ever watch,” said Hamilton.
“It” will be released in September 2017.
