Nicholas Alexander Chavez won't be returning to “General Hospital” after role in Ryan Murphy series

Chavez plays Lyle Menéndez in the next season of Murphy's "Monster" anthology series.

Many actors get their starts in daytime soaps, but when Hollywood comes a-callin', who can resist?

Apparently not young Alexander Nicholas Chavez, who was cast in the upcoming season of Ryan Murphy's anthology series Monster as one of the Menéndez brothers.

Chavez went on a temporary leave of absence from his gig at General Hospital last summer to film the series, but it looks as if the actor has left for good.

TVLine reports that Chavez will not be returning to his role on the soap as Spencer Cassadine, the son of Nikolas Cassadine and the late Courtney Matthews. Spencer had returned to Port Charles after attending European boarding schools for most of his childhood.

Reps for General Hospital did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment.

Chavez took over playing Spencer Cassadine from Nicolas Bechtel in 2021 and won a Daytime Emmy the following year for Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series. He was nominated in 2023 for Outstanding Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Daytime Drama Series.

“It's changed everything about me," Chavez told PEOPLE last summer about the impact the role has had on his career. "Before the show, I was selling cars in Florida. I live across the country now. I was driving my dad's old Jeep and now, I'm sitting in a car that I paid for. This show has given me the opportunity to become my own guy. It's also given me the gift few people get in life — the privilege to earn an income doing what I love to do every single day. If I'm not the luckiest guy in the world, I've got to be damned close."

Chavez's luck continues with his part as Lyle Menéndez in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story, opposite Cooper Koch as Erik Menendez, and Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny as their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez, who were murdered by their sons in 1989.

The previous season of Monster followed the murders of Jeffrey Dahmer, played by Evan Peters, and won several accolades, including a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Niecy Nash. The series did, however, receive a backlash from several family members of Dahmer's victims who publicly condemned it.

The Menéndez brothers murders have been highly dramatized in the past, most recently in a 2017 Law & Order: True Crime miniseries, starring Edie Falco as defense attorney Leslie Abramson. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story will premiere on Netflix later this year.
