NH 'Bans Off Our Bodies' rallies set for Friday night: Here's when and where

PORTSMOUTH — Numerous “Bans Off Our Bodies” rallies have been scheduled across the region and throughout New Hampshire in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending the consitutional right to an abortion.

Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund announced that nine communities across New Hampshire, including three in the Seacoast, will be be held simultaneously Friday at 5 p.m.

In the Seacoast, people will gather in Market Square in Portsmouth, Henry Law Park in Dover and at Exeter’s Town Hall.

A rally will also be held at the New Hampshire Supreme Court in Concord at the same time. Additional rallies around the state are planned in Hanover (the green), Keene (the city square), Lancaster (Centennial Park), Manchester (City Hall Plaza) and Plymouth (Tenney Mtn. Highway/Highland Street).

In Manchester, a group supporting the Supreme Court decision announced a 5 p.m. rally Saturday at City Hall Plaza.

Portsmouth Pride Festival will address the overturning of Roe v. Wade

Roe v. Wade will be part of the Portsmouth Pride march and celebration on Saturday, according to Seacoast Outright director Hershey Hirschkop. The New Hampshire Women’s Foundation's Crystal Paradis will speak about Roe v. Wade and the rights of women and gender minorities.

OrganizeNH plans for Reproductive Rights Weekend of Action

In conjunction with OrganizeNH, a Concord-based group working to elect Democrats, the office of Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-NH, announced she will be in Exeter on Saturday morning for OrganizeNH’s Reproductive Rights Weekend of Action. The organization’s event is focused on Granite State residents electing pro-choice political candidates in the November election."

Abortion remains legal in NH and Maine

No immediate change in abortion law is expected in either New Hampshire or Maine as a result of the court’s landmark decision to end Roe v. Wade’s federal protections.

“Abortion is still legal in New Hampshire before 24 weeks. It's still your right in New Hampshire. But the Supreme Court has dismantled your constitutional right to abortion in our country,” Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund wrote in an online announcement. “By overturning Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court has now officially given politicians permission to control what we do with our bodies.”

The organization is one of a cohort of local and state organizations and family planning clinics combining to put on Friday night’s rallies. The list includes Greenland’s Lovering Health Center, in addition to groups like the American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire, the New Hampshire Women’s Foundation and 603 Forward.
