NFL scouting combine: Browns' GM John Dorsey is willing to trade No. 1 pick

If their 0-16 record in 2017 is any indication, the Cleveland Browns need help.

And they could add some potentially big contributors in the draft: Cleveland owns not just the top pick but also No. 4 thanks to last year’s trade with the Houston Texans; also thanks to that swap, the Browns have the Nos. 33 and 35 picks in the second round.

Or…they could be wheelers and dealers.

Speaking to media at the NFL scouting combine, general manager John Dorsey said “My door is wide open” when it comes to trading the top pick.

“Give me a call and see what’s up,” Dorsey added.

Coach Hue Jackson gave indications last year that he isn’t completely sold on the quarterback the Browns drafted in 2017, DeShone Kizer. If Cleveland wanted to replace Kizer, or at least challenge him in the coming season, there are several players available this season that scouts and evaluators believe are potential franchise quarterbacks, and a couple of them would likely still be available at No. 4 if the Browns held onto that spot.

But the potential bumper crop of QBs could also work against the Browns.

There seems to be a consensus that Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen are the top prospects at the position. The Giants at No. 2 may take a quarterback given Eli Manning’s age, but the Colts at No. 3 have both a top quarterback in Andrew Luck and a more-than-serviceable backup in Jacoby Brissett.

Denver, which holds No. 5, is certainly in the market for a quarterback, though they also could be major players in free agency with Kirk Cousins available. Like the Broncos, the Jets at No. 6 are in desperate need of a quarterback, so they could be willing to trade up if they are convinced there’s one player they want more than any other.

The Buccaneers at No. 7 seemingly have their quarterback in Jameis Winston, and the team at No. 8, the Bears, affirmed on Wednesday that Mitchell Trubisky is their future at the position.

San Francisco, at No. 9, just made a major commitment to Jimmy Garoppolo, and the team at No. 10, the Raiders, have Derek Carr.

However, the next three teams – the Dolphins, Bengals and Washington – could all be in the market for a quarterback of the future, especially since each has a veteran in place who could hold the fort for 2018 while the rookie learns the ropes.

Would that mean moving up 10-plus spots and selling off future picks? Anything is possible. Remember last year, after the Bears gave Mike Glennon a three-year, $45 million free-agent contract, few were expecting them to move up to take Trubisky, but they did.

At any rate, Dorsey is open to trading – he just needs a possible partner.
