Next two 'Mission: Impossible' sequels set dates for 2021 and 2022
“Can’t stop, won’t stop” seems to be Tom Cruise‘s mantra of late, and now it’s our unofficially tagline for Mission: Impossible.
After yet another successful installment of the Ethan Hunt-focused franchise with Fallout, Paramount Pictures set specific dates for the next two sequels.
Mission: Impossible 7 is scheduled for theaters on July 23, 2021, and Mission: Impossible 8 will open on Aug. 5, 2022.
Cruise, of course, will be back for both installments, as will Christopher McQuarrie. After writing and directing Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible – Fallout, McQuarrie will resume his double-duty on 7 and 8, which will shoot back-to-back.
Skydance Media will also be rejoining as a partner on the franchise with Paramount.
“We couldn’t be more excited to build on the massive success of Mission:Impossible – Fallout by reteaming with Chris and Tom on these next two films, following two successful collaborations,” Jim Gianopulos, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, said in a statement. “We’ve also enjoyed a great partnership with Skydance and David Ellison on these three most recent films and look forward to continued success together on this great franchise.”
Fallout made $791.1 million worldwide at the box office for Paramount after the film debuted on July 27, 2018, making this the highest-grossing installment of the franchise. In total, the Mission: Impossible movies have made $3.5 billion worldwide.
As the subtitle suggested, it marked the “fallout” from certain events that transpired in Rogue Nation, as well as an element of nuclear fallout. Henry Cavill, Vanessa Kirby, and Angela Bassett joined Cruise and the returning Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin, and Sean Harris for the chapter that saw Cruise performing a HALO jump from 25,000 feet above the ground.
McQuarrie told Collider in November of the next film, “I can tell you Tom already has a lot of really big ideas. Yeah. World-topping s—.”
