New York Comic-Con: Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ Unveils New Cast Additions, First Images
At New York Comic-Con today, Netflix series Daredevil, which stars Charlie Cox as the blind Marvel Comics superhero/lawyer, announced four new castings. Ayelet Zurer will play Vanessa Marianna, Vondie Curtis-Hall has been cast as Ben Urich, Bob Gunton as Leland “The Owl” Owlsley and Toby Leonard Moore as Wesley. During the panel — the first time the cast and creators have gone Con — the first images and footage from the series were revealed. Moderating the session was Jeph Loeb, Marvel TV head of television, who shot down Internet-fueled casting rumors about subsequent Netflix series based on the Marvel characters Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Loeb is also an executive producer on Jessica Jones.
Along with DeKnight, the panel also included cast members Cox, Curtis-Hall, Gunton, Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Toby Moore (Wesley), Ayelet Zurer (Vanessa) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Kingpin). They all discussed their characters during the slick presentation. “It’s been a real challenge,” Cox said. “There are so many aspects. There’s the blindness and physicality. Making a show is about human emotion, conflict and turmoil. When meeting a man who’s a lawyer by day and believes in law and justice and then a man by night is someone who takes the law into his own hands. He deals with battles dealing with that concept.
Blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, Matt Murdock fights against injustice as a lawyer by day — by night as the masked superhero Daredevil in modern-day Hell’s Kitchen. Here are two new images from series with Cox as his attorney and superhero identities.
Cox, who played Owen Slater on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, talked about the differences between working for the premium cabler and streaming service Netflix. “One thing I noticed when reading the script is that because there’s not a week in between, because you don’t have to remind people what happened and there isn’t the need for a cliff hangers, you can tell real stories. Like nothing else, it’s going to feel like a 13-hour movie.”
Other cast members who didn’t make the panel include Dawson, Scott Glenn and Peter Shinkoda. Drew Goddard wrote the first two episodes of Daredevil and is also EP. The series is set debut in 2015. The rights to the character reverted from Fox to Disney in April 2013.
