Why Dave Chappelle, Hakeem Lyon and Derek ‘McDreamy’ Shepherd Are TV’s Social Media MVPs of the Week

An “SNL” guest host, a troubled “Empire” character and a dead doctor had viewers talking passionately on social media over the past week.

The Wrap has partnered with Canvs, a language analytics company that measures emotions around content, for a weekly look at the characters and personalities that have TV viewers the most worked up. The data below covers Nov. 9-15 and is drawn from the most emotionally reacted-to broadcast and cable television shows. For the purposes of this analysis we excluded election-related news programming.

Of the 126,031 Emotional Reactions (ERs) surrounding this past weekend’s “Saturday Night Live,” 62 percent were prompted by guest host Dave Chappelle. Lots of viewers particularly praised his funny, trenchant opening monologue on the first post-election “SNL.”

Of the 33,824 ERs surrounding last Wednesday’s “Empire,” 13 percent were prompted by the character Hakeem Lyon (Bryshere Y. Gray) who had a lot of drama going on in the episode, which in turn inspired a lot of drama on Twitter.

Of the 21,372 ERs surrounding last Thursday’s episode of the ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” 15 percent mentioned Dr. Derek Shepherd, aka McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey) — a character killed off in 2015. This episode showed that not only is Derek not forgotten, but fans are still not over his death.
