Nolan learns that torture is "cleansing" for the Castithans.

The premiere episodes of "Defiance" opened a whole new and volatile existence in Earth's future, where humans and aliens (and everything in between) must attempt to live together and share the planet. Joshua Nolan (Grant Bowler) and his adopted daughter, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas), have wound up in the town of Defiance, fighting alongside the hierarchical, ethereal alien race known as the Castithans. But Castithan rules and religious practices are going to take some getting used to.

In this exclusive four-minute sneak peek of the second episode, "Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go," a Castithan named Elah Bandik of the Yuke Liro laid down arms during their latest battle. The Castithans believe that this cowardly action takes the honor of every Castithan in Defiance, and Bandik must therefore be "cleansed": a ritual that consists of him getting nearly quartered by his limbs.

Nolan and Irisa are shocked to find that the Castithans "cleansing ritual" consists of torture. Nolan refuses to have any part of this type of ceremony if he's going to live peacefully among the Castithans, even if Bandik himself wants to go through with it in order to restore honor to his caste.
