Watch the First 4 Minutes of 'Defiance,' Episode 9 [Exclusive Video]
Previously on "Defiance," Nolan (Grant Bowler) became suspicious of the involvement of Doc Yewll (Trenna Keating) in the poking and prodding of humans during the Pale War. Her face said it all: She was much more involved than she cared to admit.
If what Yewll did was anything like what her people did to an astronaut abducted in 2013 (he was killed when his memories were stolen, modified, and used by an Indogene who could be disguised as a human), she had some explaining to do. Before she could answer Nolan's question about her involvement, citizens of Defiance began coming to her for help and were dropping like flies from viral hemorrhagic fever.
In this exclusive four-minute sneak peek at Episode 9, "If I Ever Leave This World Alive," Alak Tarr (Jesse Rath) broadcasts a message about the town's very own highly contagious plague as his fiancée, Christie (Nicole Muñoz), looks on, appearing to be infected. Important note: Irathients and humans both carry the disease, but only humans get sick. That can't be good for Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas) and her fellow Iraths.

Alak warns everyone that facemasks are useless against a disease that is spread through skin contact, as a street vendor makes bank selling facemasks with his bare hands. Everyone is told to stay calm and stay indoors — instead they run around panicking. Are these townspeople dumb as doornails or just deaf?
As the medical containment area overflows with new patients, Nolan and Mayor Rosewater (Julie Benz) add to the confusion by hurrying to the containment area without any gloves. They're silently praying that a cure will arrive soon as humans die violently of the disease by leaking raspberry-colored blood from every orifice in their heads. Oh, and now Nolan is sweating, which he promises is from the heat. That can't be good.
Meanwhile, Iraths and "Haints" (a racist term referring to Castithans) are fighting about an illness neither of them can get. The Iraths are attempting to escape — which is what everyone in Defiance wants them to do anyway — but they are facing resistance from nearly every nearby town. Nobody wants a disease-carrying Irath around.

It turns out the humans are even angrier than the Castithans; they are the ones who bear the brunt of the disease, after all. The Iraths are afraid of a dark history repeating — a history in which humans hunted and killed them.
Unfortunately, father Nolan and daughter Irisa are on opposite sides of that history. The last time they were together, the pair were fighting about Irisa's desire to be with her own kind and Nolan's wanting her to be daddy's little girl. Now she seems defiantly happy to pray with her Irathient "family." That's just going to put a greater strain on Papa Nolan and his relationship with his daughter.
