‘Twerking Girl on Fire’: How Jimmy Kimmel Fooled the Internet (and ‘The View’)

Two months before Miley Cyrus besmirched the proud tradition of twerking, Jimmy Kimmel quietly posted recorded a video of a woman twerking, falling on a coffee table, and setting her pants on fire.

He didn’t send it to TV stations, tweet it, or do anything else to link it to his show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” — but it still burned with the urgency of the woman’s yoga pants. Soon it made it onto countless news outlets, including HLN, “The Talk,” and “The View.”

On Monday, Kimmel introduced the burning twerker — actually a stuntwoman named Daphne Avalon.

“We just put it on YouTube and let the magic happen, and the magic happened,” Kimmel said. The video was viewed more than 9 million times.

“Some people even blamed Miley Cyrus as if this was her fault,” Kimmel said before running a montage of news reports about the twerk-gone-awry. “Good thing nothing is happening in Syria right now.”
