TWC Nabs U.S. Rights to Todd Haynes’ ‘Carol’

The Weinstein Company has picked up U.S. rights for “Carol,” which Todd Haynes will helm.

Phyllis Nagy’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel will star Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska.

Pic is produced by Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley at Number 9 Films and is repped in international markets by HanWay Films.

“Carol” follows the relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York: one, a girl in her twenties working in a department store who dreams of a more fulfilling life, and the other, a wife trapped in a loveless, moneyed marriage desperate to break free, but fearful of losing her daughter in the process.

Pic is co-developed and co-financed by Film4. Christine Vachon’s Killer Films will co-produce. Filming starts October in London and New York.
