TV News Roundup: Freeform Casts ‘Brown Girls’ Pilot, Mariah Carey’s Reality Show Gets Supersized Premiere

In today’s TV news roundup, more news for Mariah Carey’s reality show, Marlee Matlin is scheduled to appear on “Code Black,” Freeform’s “Brown Girls” pilot finds its girls and Sarah Hyland hosts the one-hour special “Lip Sync Battle Shorties.”

Mariah Carey‘s reality show “Mariah’s World” will premiere on both E! and Bravo for its first episode on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 9 p.m., giving the new series maximum exposure across the two networks. Following the premiere, the rest of the eight-part event series will air on E! Sunday nights. “Mariah’s World” gives an inside look at the superstar’s life, career and complicated personal relationships.

CASTING

Freeform’s comedy pilot “Brown Girls” has cast its titular girls. Hina Abdullah will play Rimmi, a fashion-forward young woman trying to ignore her heritage and start a makeup blog. Punam Patel will play Devi, a woman who is confident but content with her traditional Indian values, and who reaches out to Rimmi upon her arrival in Los Angeles. “Brown Girls” comes from writers Shilpi Roy and Nastaran Dibai. Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin will guest star on the Dec. 7 episodes of CBS drama series “Code Black.” She will portray Kathy Byrne, a deaf patient who arrives at Angels Memorial with her translator after their car rolls over into a river. Matlin’s film credits include “Walker,” “The Player,” “It’s My Party” and “Children of a Lesser God,” for which she won an Oscar.

RENEWALS

E! has renewed reality series “WAGS” for a third season, as well as ordered a second season for the spin-off “WAGS Miami.” Both are scheduled for eight episode seasons to premiere in 2017. Produced by Machete Productions, the first season finale of “WAGS Miami” airs Sunday, Nov. 20 at 10 p.m.

SPECIALS

“Modern Family” star Sarah Hyland will host the one-hour special “Lip Sync Battle Shorties,” set to premiere on Nickelodeon Sunday, Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. Created by Casey Patterson Entertainment and Matador, the special serves a spin-off to Spike’s successful series “Lip Sync Battle” and will feature four kid performers, the Lip Sync Battle Shorties Dance Crew and more. The special will re-air on Spike on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 8 p.m.

Sofia Carson is getting a big push on Disney and ABC networks this holiday season. She’ll first appear in “The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration,” a two-hour showcase from Walt Disney World Resort on Thanksgiving Day at 8 p.m. on ABC, followed by “Disney Parks Presents: A Descendants Magical Holiday Celebration” on Friday, Nov. 25 at 8 p.m. on Disney Channel. She will then appear in the Freeform TV film “A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits” on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 8 p.m., Christmas special “The Disney Parks’ Magical Christmas Celebration” on Sunday, Dec. 25 at 10 a.m., and the all-day feature “New Year’s Evie” on Disney Channel.
