‘The Simpsons’ Go Virtual With Immersive Couch Gag in 600th Episode
Springfield’s First Family ventures into the world of virtual reality with the help of Google. Airing on Sunday, October 16th at 8 p.m., The Simpsons’ 600th episode will open with a couch gag that immerses viewers in a 360-degree virtual world… if you have the Google Spotlight Stories app and Google Cardboard, or you were one of the lucky 25,000 fans who won one from Fox. But don’t worry, the app is free, and Google Cardboard will only set you back $15.
The episode, which is Treehouse of Horror 27 or XXVII (for our Roman Numeral aficionados), opens with the VR sequence, entitled “Planet of the Couches,” and it promises different experiences with multiple viewings. Guest-voice appearances will include The Price Is Right host Drew Carey, Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, comedian Sarah Silverman, and recording artist Judith Owen, as well as an appearance by Homer’s long-dead enemy, Frank Grimes.
The Treehouse of Horror has become a Halloween tradition on The Simpsons that began in 1990 and generally features parodies of Twilight Zone episodes and classic scary movies like Poltergeist, Dracula, and The Shining (or Shinning, we don’t don’t want to get sued).
The Simpsons airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
