Student Academy Awards Honors Collegiate Helmers
The 40th annual Student Academy Awards honored 16 students from various universities on June 8, with USC and the U. of Texas, Austin among top winners.
Former Student Academy Award winner (1978) and writer-director Bob Saget hosted the kudos at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, while Kimberly Peirce, Clark Gregg, Jason Schwartzman and Quvenzhane Wallis presented the honors.
The awards have a different format from the Oscars, with the student awards placing directors as gold, silver and bronze winners in five categories (alternative, animation, documentary, narrative and foreign).
Schools that received honors for the first time included Elon University, Occidental College and the University of Michigan in the U.S. competition. Zurich University of the Arts and RITS School of Arts and Erasmus University College Brussels were first time winners in the foreign competition.

Narrative
Gold Medal: “Ol’ Daddy,” Brian Schwarz, University of Texas at Austin
Silver Medal: “Josephine and the Roach,” Jonathan Langager, USC
