Bindi Irwin posted a touching tribute to her late father on Steve Irwin Day.
“Celebrating Dad’s life and legacy with Steve Irwin Day this November 15th @australiazoo. Encouraging everyone to wear a touch of khaki on this amazing day to remember all that Dad did for our world, inspiring us all to love wildlife and wild places. Thank you,” Bindi posted on Instagram, accompanied by a photo of Bindi with her father wearing matching khaki outfits.
Steve Irwin Day is an annual international event on Nov. 15 which honors the life of Steve Irwin, who died on Sept. 4, 2006 after a stingray attack.
In 2014, Justin Lyons, Irwin’s underwater photographer and best friend, opened up about watching the famed “Crocodile Hunter’s” death by a stingray’s barb through the chest. Lyons was filming Irwin for a special called “Ocean’s Deadliest,” and after eight days of filming crocodiles and other animals, the pair focused in on a ray — normally a very calm animal — which started to stab its tail rapidly and wildly.
“I panned with the camera as the stingray swam away and I didn’t know it had caused any damage,” Lyons told an Australian TV station. “It was only when I panned the camera back that I saw Steve standing in a huge pool of blood that I realized something had gone wrong.”
Throughout the day, 18-year-old Bindi shared three more photos of her father with the caption, “Khaki and the happiest memories.”

Derek Hough, who was Bindi’s partner in their “Dancing with the Stars” victory last year, also posted a tribute to Irwin in light of the annual event, writing, “Since it’s November 15th in Australia I wanted to wish everyone a wonderful Steve Irwin day. I was always a fan of his passion and love for the world. His legacy lives on. It was such an honor and privilege to get to know and work with his beautiful daughter,” the Instagram post reads.
“Such a special soul. Choreographing and creating with her, helping to tell her story will always be a highlight in my career. This image was taken at the end of our final dance which was a tribute to her super hero. Her Dad. Steve Irwin.”
