Stephen Colbert Sets Election Night Live Showtime Special

Stephen Colbert has finalized plans for a live Election Night special on Showtime that will allow “The Late Show” host to let loose on the 2016 presidential race in an advertising-free environment.

“Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night Democracy’s Series Finale: Who’s Going To Clean Up This S—?” will be exec produced by the team behind his CBS late-night series. The hourlong special will air at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT.

“It’ll be all the political comedy you love from my CBS show, with all the swearing and nudity you love from Showtime,” said Colbert.

Plans for the project surfaced in August during Showtime’s Television Critics Association press tour presentation. With CBS and Showtime being corporate siblings under the CBS Corp. umbrella, giving Colbert real estate on Showtime allows the comedian and the pay cabler to capitalize on Election Night interest on a night when CBS will be in all-news mode.

The special marks a rare instance of live entertainment programming coming from Showtime. The telecast will originate from “The Late Show” set at the Ed Sullivan Theater and feature a mix of Colbert reacting to state-by-state election returns, guests and live remote segments. It will also include a studio audience.

Colbert, Chris Licht, Tom Purcell and Jon Stewart are exec producing “Democracy’s Series Finale.”
