Stephen Colbert: George Zimmerman's Lawyer Has Interesting Knock-Knock Joke Strategy (Video)
Stephen Colbert took a few minutes during Tuesday's night's "Colbert Report" to "admire" George Zimmerman's lawyer's opening statement to the jury.
Zimmerman is accused of murdering Trayvon Martin, a serious charge of course. But his lawyer, Don West, took a different tack. He "started the healing with humor," Colbert said.
In the clip, West tells the jury a "little joke," saying "sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying." West added: "I think you're the perfect audience for it." Which they are, in that they are legally required to sit there and listen to it.
Here's the joke:
"Knock knock"
"Who's there?"
"George Zimmerman."
"George Zimmerman who?"
"All right, good. You're on the jury."
West then expressed his disappointment that no one on the jury laughed.
Colbert compared the the moment from the trial to "To Kill a Mockingbird," specifically Atticus Finch's opening statement to the jury in which he passionately urged them to do their "duty" and acquit his client, then wondered why no one was laughing at his "doody" joke.
I'm pretty sure that last part was not in the actual film. But it was funnier than West's joke.
