Shannen Doherty Joins TV Land’s ‘Heathers’ Reboot

Original “Heathers” star Shannen Doherty will appear in TV Land’s television reboot of the cult-classic 1980’s flick.

Doherty shared the news on Instagram today, posting a photo of her in character on set with the caption, “Sneak peek from the #Heathers set……jealous much?”

The news comes as the actress is battling breast cancer. She was diagnosed in February 2015, and has been publicly outspoken about her fight. Four days ago, she shared a photo on Instagram from a recent CT scan, opening up about radiation treatment.

In the 1988 film that starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, Doherty played Heather Duke, one of the three Heathers aka the school’s mean girl clique.

No word on her specific character in the pilot, but TV Land tells Variety she will play a “pivotal, unnamed character.” The network would not confirm if she’ll be featured in a regular, recurring or guest part.

It’s unlikely she’d reprise her role, as the new series features a group of all-new Heathers, who have the same character names from the original film, but this time, the outcasts have become high school royalty. Doherty’s original character Heather Duke will be played by Brendan Scannell in the revitalized role of a man who identifies as gender-queer and whose real name is Heath; Heather McNamara (originally played by Lisanne Falk) is now a black lesbian played by Jasmine Mathews; and Heather Chandler (originally Kim Walker in the movie) will be played by Melanie Field. The revival stars newcomers James Scully and Grace Victoria Cox as J.D. and Veronica, the roles originally played by Slater and Ryder.

TV Land’s “Heathers” is based on the film, but takes place in present-day. It is described as a “pitch black comedy.” In contention for a series pickup, the pilot is currently in production in Los Angeles.

This is not the first time Doherty is returning to the reboot of one of her iconic projects. She also appeared on “90210,” the CW’s reboot of “Beverly Hills 90210,” reprising her role as Brenda Walsh in a total of seven episodes in 2008-2009.
