When Kristen Wiig returns to Saturday Night Live to host for the second time, she may bust out some of the characters that made her a star on the late-night sketch show — a little Gilly, a bit of Target Lady.
But when she hosted for the first time in 2013, it was the original sketches that stood out the most, like this faux commercial for 1-800-Flowers promoting Mother’s Day gifts.
The best part was seeing Wiig and Kate McKinnon playing off each other. The two barely overlapped on SNL before Wiig left to make movies. And back in 2013, McKinnon was still finding her footing on the show. Now, of course, McKinnon is one of SNL’s brightest players, and the two starred together in this summer’s Ghostbusters.
This sketch perfectly foretells their Ghostbusters chemistry. Wiig plays a daughter who gushes about her mom (McKinnon). “She’s my role model, my best friend, and everything I hope I’ll be one day.”
She manages to say that with a straight face even though her mom is clearly passive-aggressive, overbearing, and nitpicking. When Wiig gets her flowers, McKinnon pats her arm. “But maybe you should keep them, because your apartment is so sad.”

And of course, Mom has to check to make sure there are no nuts in the eggs Benedict. Even though there are never nuts in eggs Benedict. And mom isn’t even allergic!
