Robert Kirkman’s ‘Outcast’ Ordered to Series at Cinemax
Cinemax is diving into the weird world of “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman, giving a series order to a paranormal drama based on his comicbook title “Outcast.”
The 10-episode series will be produced for Cinemax by Fox International Channels as part of that group’s push to generate original series that can become day-and-date programming events around the world. Most of FIC’s entertainment outlets have had massive success with “The Walking Dead.”
“Gone Girl’s” Patrick Fugit (pictured) stars in “Outcast” as a young man who sets off to discover why he’s been possessed by demons since he was a child. His search is aided by an unconventional evangelist, played by Philip Glenister, who has possession issues of his own. Gabriel Bateman co-stars as an 8-year-old also battling demons.
Kirkman wrote the pilot script and exec produces with Chris Black, David Alpert, former HBO exec Sue Naegle and FIC’s Sharon Tal Yguado. Horror helmer Adam Wingard directed the pilot. The original Skybound/Image comic was created by Kirkman and artist Paul Azaceta.
HBO programming chief Michael Lombardo called Kirkman “a visionary talent who has the unique ability to tap into today’s zeitgeist, making him a perfect fit for the newly expanded Cinemax roster.”
Developing original programming out of Hollywood has been a high priority for the FIC unit of 21st Century Fox. FIC is home to more than 350 channels reaching nearly 200 countries.
” ‘Outcast’ is an ambitious series, and Adam Wingard has directed a powerful pilot. I am very proud of the work that Robert, Sharon and the team have put together,” said FIC president-CEO Hernan Lopez.
Cinemax’s series order for “Outcast” comes on the heels of the greenlight earlier this month for 1970s period drama “Quarry” and the fourth season renewal of “Banshee.” There’s no word yet on a premiere date for “Outcast.”
