Report: Modern Family, La Bamba Actress Elizabeth Pena Died of Alcohol Abuse

Actress Elizabeth Pena's death last week was caused by cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol abuse, TMZ reports.

Pena, who starred in the movies La Bamba and Jacob's Ladder, and played Gloria's (Sofia Vergara) mother Pilar on Modern Family, died Oct. 14 at age 55.

Her death certificate states that Pena suffered from cirrhosis for months, and her heart stopped after acute gastrointestinal bleeding, according to TMZ.

Pena's other film credits include Lone Star and Rush Hour.

"We were so sad to learn of the passing of Elizabeth Pena. A member of our Family, she will be missed. #RIPElizabethPena," Modern Family co-creator and executive producer Steve Levitan tweeted after her death.

Star Jesse Tyler Ferguson added: "The entire cast and crew are very sad to say goodbye to one of our Modern Family members. RIP to the beautiful & talented #ElizabethPena."
