Ratings: Scandal Tops Grey's Anatomy, American Idol Falls to Series Low

Ratings were down across the board on Thursday, the first full night of May Sweeps.

CBS won the night despite all of its shows flirting with season/series lows (The Big Bang Theory plunged 19 percent, but remained Thursday’s top draw.)

On Fox, American Idol and Glee were down sharply (the former notching a series low in the demo), and NBC’s Hannibal sank to a fresh low of 2.4 million viewers and a 1.0 in the demo. (Competition from the NFL draft and NBA playoffs no doubt contributed to the erosion.)

On The CW, The Vampire Diaries‘ highly publicized backdoor Originals spin-off pilot drew 2.2 million viewers and a 0.9 among adults 18-49, on par with last week’s prom episode but down from the show’s season average.

ABC’s red-hot Scandal bucked the downward trend, equaling a series high and even edging Grey’s Anatomy in the demo (2.8 vs. 2.7), although the Seattle Grace docs topped the Gladiators in overall audience (8.1 million vs. 7.8 million).
