RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘American Idol’ Continues To Rise, ‘Suburgatory’ Finale Slips, ‘Dateline’ & ‘Survivor’ Even With Last Week

Did you know that a woman hasn’t won American Idol (3.3/9) in six years? That will not be the case this year with the five remaining finalists all female. Which is why it was Ladies Night on Idol on Wednesday. What that actually meant for the live two-hour show was that Angie Miller, Janelle Arthur, Candice Glover, Kree Harrison and Amber Holcomb sang songs from the 1989 to 1994 years of their respective births. It also meant there was some more tension between female judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey with the former disagreeing with the latter’s assessment of one contestant with a “simmer down, sir.” Last night’s Idol was also up from last week. It rose 3% from the fast nationals of its April 11 show and, because there was no change last week, the same from that broadcast’s final numbers. This is the fourth broadcast in a row that Idol has seen consecutive growth. Hitting 12.4 millon viewers on Wednesday, Idol was also up 2% in overall viewers from last week’s final numbers. With the 8 PM to 10 PM Idol, Fox took top spot for the night in total viewers and among Adults 18-49.

Suburgatory wrapped up its second season on ABC last night with a double dose. The 8 PM (1.5/5) show was down 25% from The Middle’s result in the same slot last week and down 17% from its regular 8:30 slot of last week to hit a series low. However, the 8:30 PM finale (1.7/5) dipped just 6% from the sitcom’s April 11 numbers. In its third week,How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life) (2.0/5) had an Academy Award-themed show. It also saw the new show fall 20% from its April 11 show. However, the freshman comedy retained 100% of the 9 PM Modern Family (2.0/5) repeat that ran before it. ABC ended the night with a Nashville (0.9/2) encore at 10 PM

Over on CBS’ Survivor: Caramoan (2.6/8) things got truly strategic in the Tribal Council on the tenth week of the latest season of the veteran reality series. Last night’s Survivor was even with its April 11 show. Otherwise, the network had encores of Criminal Minds (1.7/5) and Elementary (1.2/3) on last night. Like last Wednesday, the only original NBC had on last night was Dateline (1.2/4) at 8 PM. The newsmagazine show was even with last week’s ratings result. NBC ran a Law & Order: SVU (1.1/3) encore afterwards, which was up 23% from last week’s repeat, and a Chicago Fire (1.0/3) at 10 PM. The CW ran repeats of Arrow (04/1) and Supernatural (0.5/1) last night.
