Ratings: ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Finale Drops 25 Percent From Last Year

“Dancing With the Stars” lifted ABC to second place overall last night, but the Season 23 finale’s TV Ratings dropped 25 percent from last fall.
To be fair to the Disney dancing competition, the adults 18-49 measurement was up 13 percent over Season 22, but that one was in the spring, which has lower TV tune-in levels in general.
Last night, Laurie Hernandez won the Mirror Ball Trophy with pro partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy. Clearly, her popularity level couldn’t touch the phenomenon of Bindi Irwin, November 2015’s champ. By the way, two falls ago, when Alfonso Ribeiro won the whole thing, the show scored a 3.0 in the key demo — a nice jump from its predecessor finale. But that still means the 24-month drop is 40 percent.

NBC was first in ratings with a 1.9 rating/7 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, but in total viewers with an average of 8.3 million, according to preliminary numbers. “The Voice” at 8 p.m. posted a 1.8/7 and 9.5 million viewers. At 9, “This Is Us” earned a 2.4/8 and 9 million viewers. “Chicago Fire” at 10 received a 1.5/5 and 6.4 million viewers.
ABC was second in ratings with a 1.7/6 and in viewers with 9.4 million. “The Middle” at 8 had a 1.6/6 and 6.8 million viewers. At 8:30, “American Housewife” got a 1.4/5 and 6.1 million viewers. “Dancing With the Stars” at 9 put up a 1.8/6 and 10.9 million viewers.
CBS was third in ratings with a 1.5/5, but first and in viewers with 11.4 million. “NCIS” at 8 scored a 1.9/7 and 14.8 million viewers. At 9, “Bull” landed a 1.5/5 and 10.8 million viewers. “NCIS: New Orleans” at 10 closed primetime to a 1.2/4 and 8.5 million viewers.

The CW, Telemundo and Fox all tied for fourth in ratings, each with a 0.7. Telemundo had a 3 share, the other two broadcast nets got a 2. The CW was fourth in total viewers with 1.91 million, Telemundo was fifth with 1.85 million, and Fox was seventh with 1.6 million.
For CW, “The Flash” at 8 received a 1.1/4 and 2.9 million viewers. “No Tomorrow” at 9 managed a 0.3/1 and 865,000 viewers.
For Fox, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” at 8 had a 0.9/3 and 2.2 million viewers. “New Girl” at 8:30 got a 0.8/3 and 1.8 million viewers. At 9, “Scream Queens” settled for a 0.5/2 and 1.2 million viewers.

Univision was seventh in ratings with a 0.6/2 and sixth in viewers with 1.79 million.
