‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5′ to Hit Theaters July 2017

Captain Jack Sparrow has just planted a pirate flag in the 2017 movie season.

After a few false starts and delays, “Pirates of the Caribbean 5″ will sail into theaters on July 7, 2017, Walt Disney Studios said Wednesday. The latest rum-soaked installment in the Johnny Depp franchise has the date to itself, but faces competition from the July 14th release of “Fantastic Four 2″ and the June 30th debut of “Despicable Me 3.”

Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, who got their sea legs with “Kon Tiki,” will direct.

Disney has been getting way out ahead when it comes to dating its films. Last Friday it announced release dates for a quintet of untitled Marvel films, so get ready to enjoy the last of those come 2019.

“Pirates of the Caribbean 5″ was originally slated for a summer 2015 release date, but the film was pushed back over script issues. In the meantime, producer Jerry Bruckheimer ended his long-term deal with Disney last year and decamped for Paramount.

The Pirates movies have made $3.7 billion at the global box office and made Depp a superstar, so it’s easy to see why Disney wants to board the Black Pearl once more.
