Oscar Race: Bangladesh Selects ‘Firefly’ for Foreign-Language Contention

LONDON — Bangladesh’s Oscar selection committee has chosen director Khalid Mohammed Mithu’s “Glow of the Firefly” (‘Jonakir Alo’) as the country’s contender in the Academy Awards foreign language category.

September 24 was the local cut off date for entries and “Firefly” was the only film submitted.

The film is about a woman whose idea of adopting a child is met with opposition from her conservative in-laws. Her outlook on life changes when she meets an avant-garde artist. Bidya Sinha Saha Mim and Gazi Rakayet star. Leading Bangladesh production house Impress Telefilm produced.

“Firefly” won best director at the Brasov International Film Festival, Romania, earlier this month.

This is Bangladesh’s 10th entry in the category since it began submitting in 2002. The country has yet to secure a nomination.
