‘O Girls’ Sneak Peek: The Impact of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls

“It’s hard to be a girl where I come from,” says a young African named Bongeka in this exclusive sneak peek from the Fusion documentary O Girls.

But Bongeka and other girls rose above their backgrounds thanks to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. O Girls tells the stories of five OWLAG graduates who received a world-class education, some of whom went on to graduate from college.

Fusion correspondent Kimberly Brooks, a former assistant at The Oprah Winfrey Show, accompanied Winfrey on a trip to the academy in South Africa, and now reunites with her “sisters” a decade later to talk about how their lives have changed as a result of OWLAG.

In this clip, Brooks asks Bongeka what would’ve happened had she never attended the academy. “I’d probably be dead,” she admits.

O Girls premieres Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. on Fusion.
