Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey Exit ‘American Idol’

It was move out day on Fox’s “American Idol,” as both Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj announced they’re departing the singing competition series after just one season.

Carey’s publicity firm, PMK BNC, tweeted Thursday that Carey is departing the Fox series and planning a world tour in support of her new single “Beautiful.”

Minaj also took to social media to confirm her exit from the program today, saying, “Thank you American Idol for a life changing experience! Wouldn’t trade it for the world! Time to focus on the Music!!! Mmmuuuaahhh!!!”

Carey and Minaj joined “Idol” as judges last year along with fellow newbie Keith Urban. The trio of music stars joined “Idol” vet Randy Jackson at the judges’ table, and Carey and Minaj made headlines as they feuded on and off the airwaves.

The ankling of Minaj and Carey follows Jackson’s announcement that he is leaving the show, made just a few weeks back.

“Idol” has suffered in its most recent season, dealing with record-low ratings and dubious publicity surrounding purported plans to oust Carey and replace her with former judge Jennifer Lopez. The finale of season 12 that aired earlier this month was the first to not clear 20 million viewers in over a decade.

With Keith Urban now the only judge from season 12 who hasn’t left the series, it’s unclear who will step up to the table for the show’s 13th run, though rumors are swirling that chantoosie Jennifer Hudson’s name is in the mix. Fox chief Kevin Reilly stated during a conference call before the net’s Upfront this month that it’s “likely” that the judges’ table will only have three seats at it for the program’s next season.

Fox, FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment issued statements about the judges’ departures:

“Mariah Carey is a true global icon – one of the most accomplished artists on the planet – and we feel extremely fortunate that she was able to bring her wisdom and experience to the ‘American Idol’ contestants this season. We know she will remain an inspiration to ‘Idol’ hopefuls for many seasons to come.”

The companies added: “Nicki Minaj is a superstar who brought a level of honesty and passion to ‘American Idol’ and who had a tremendous positive impact on so many contestants this season. Given her extremely busy career, we understand and respect her decision and wish her the best.”
