MTV Shuts Down 'Buckwild' Production Following Shain Gandee's Death

MTV announced today it has shut down production on Season 2 of its reality hit "Buckwild," in the wake of the death of cast member Shain Gandee.

A network spokesperson told Deadline that filming has been halted, although it's unclear whether the show's second season will ultimately air, or if Gandee will be featured if it does. If they do decide to feature him, they'll have to tread lightly. Bravo took a lot of heat for continuing to show Taylor Armstrong's late husband Russell on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" after he took his own life in August 2011.

Gandee was found dead this morning when local deputies discovered his body, along with those of his uncle David Gandee and 27-year-old Donald Robert Myers, in Shain's Ford Bronco near Sissonville, West Virginia. The cause of death is still unknown. Shain and David were last seen leaving a bar at 3 AM on Saturday to go four-wheeling, and were reported missing by family members last night.

The 21-year-old Gandee was one of nine cast members of MTV's "Buckwild," a series billed as "'Jersey Shore' of the Appalachia," with West Virginia youngsters fighting and partying a la Snooki and The Situation. But Gandee was actually one of the more likeable and level-headed cast members, and didn't seem to change much despite the sudden fame the show brought with it.
