Mipcom: Telemundo Nabs a Trio of Globo’s Telenovelas, Led by ‘Rules of the Game’

Spanish-speaking network Telemundo continues to bet on on Brazilian telenovelas, licensing U.S. TV rights to a trio of recent hit productions by media giant Globo, including Emmy 2016-nominated “Rules of the Game.”

One of Globo’s highlights at the current Mipcom edition, “Rules of the Game,” written by Joao Emanuel Carneiro, author of the worldwide phenomenon “Brazil Avenue,” revolves around the thin line between good and evil, focusing on a former politician of dubious character who, despite being regarded as a people’s hero, forms part of a powerful criminal faction.

Aired in March, the telenovela’s last episode notched up more than 42 million viewers in Brazil, and has been already acquired in territories such as Israel, Ecuador, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina.

Toplining Alexandre Nero (“Empire”) “Rules of the Game” has been nominated for the 2016 International Emmy in both best telenovela and best actor categories.

Telemundo has also licensed the rights of “Ambitious Women” a story of power in which three women fight real battles in order to achieve their goals. The telenovela toplines “Brazil Avenue” actress Adriana Esteves, Gloria Pires (“Irrational Heart”), and Camila Pitanga, star of 2013 International Emmy Award winning “Side by Side.”

“Ambitious Women,” which scored 24 million viewers in Brazil, has been sold by Globo to Mozambique, Uruguay, Portugal and Ecuador, among other countries.

“Forever and Ever,” the third telenovela of the trio, aired during the 2014-2015 season in Brazil, averaging a strong 47% share and more than 22 million eyeballs.

A long-time buyer of Globo telenovelas, Telemundo has broadcast standout titles such as “The Clone,” “Written in the Stars” and “Brazil Avenue.”

The new telenovelas will be launch in sequence on Telemundo’s noon time slot. The first, “Ambitious Women,” will replace another Globo hit, 2015 Emmy winner “Empire,” according to a statement by Globo.

Globo’s teen drama “Malhação – Sonhos” (“Young Hearts – Dreams”) is competing for the Emmy Kids Award for the second year in a row, this time in the digital category. Directed by Jose Alvarenga Jr., “Young Hearts” was nominated for the Emmy Kids in 2015 as best series.
