Mindy Kaling Will Return to 'The Office' for Premiere

Mindy Kaling is departing "The Office" to start her own Fox sitcom, "The Mindy Project," but she doesn't plan to leave her old show hanging.

Kaling said at the Television Critics Association summer press tour Monday that she plans to return for at least one episode of the NBC series to resolve the fate of her character, Kelly Kapoor.

"I'm headed back for -- I think I'm going to be in the premiere, and maybe another episode," she said. "I got attached to that character. It's fun to see what's going to happen to Kelly.

The overlap between "The Office" and "The Mindy Project" doesn't end there: "Office" star Ed Helms will also appear on the new show's premiere. And "Office" co-creator Greg Daniels will direct an episode of "The Mindy Project."

So what does Kaling think will happen to Kelly?

"I've always thought that Kelly was probably the one on 'The Office' who was the most into reality television," she said. Maybe, she said, Kelly will "move to L.A. under some feeling that she would become a big star, and it would all blow up in her face."
