Young and the Restless star Michael Muhney was abruptly fired from the soap this week, according to a post from the actor on Twitter.

"I'm so sorry. It breaks my heart to say this, but I was just let go from Y&R. My last day on set is this Thursday," Muhney, who plays leading man Adam Newman, tweeted Tuesday.

Muhney did not elaborate on the reasons behind his firing, but said his last air date will be Jan. 30. "I have 3 final episodes to film, and because they are my last, I will be giving it everything I have. More details will follow... #xoxoxo," he added.

2013: The year in soaps

Muhney, who previously starred on Veronica Mars, took over the role of Adam Newman from Chris Engen in 2009. He received a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Drama this year.

In an interview with Canada's Huffington Post, Muhney said he was surprised but not blindsided by the news. "I saw it coming, and I didn't see it coming. I suspected it could happen, but I didn't think that it really would," he told HuffPo."Part of me feels this is because I've always been outspoken, and sometimes I've been too outspoken. Sometimes I've walked around with a big backpack full of hubris. That is entirely on me."

The worst of 2013

Muhney confirmed that, while he won't be returning to the show, fans will definitely be seeing more of Adam. "It was explained to me that CBS and Sony want to give Adam a break for three to six months and then they'll bring him back with a different actor," he told HuffPo Canada. "Maybe he does need a break. Adam has been on screen a lot. He's not being killed off."
