Medical Drama ‘LFE’ Gets CBS Pilot Order

Medical dramas’ hot streak during pitch season is extending into pilot pickup time. CBS, which bought some half-dozen medical shows, has given a pilot order to LFE from The Dan Jinks Co. and CBS TV Studios. It follows the network’s pilot order to ER drama Code Black.

Written/co-executive produced by Paul Downs Colaizzo, LFE is described as a high-octane medical procedural centering on second-year residents at New York City’s top hospital as they attempt to balance their god complexes with their humanity. Dan Jinks executive produces.

Colaizzo, 29, got his big break when his play Really Really was staged off-Broadway in fall 2013 with David Cromer directing and Zosia Mamet starring, helping him make an overnight transition from a struggling unemployed writer to a hot playwright. Colaizzo transitioned to TV last season when he developed a one-hour pilot for ABC, executive produced by Shonda Rhimes. He would become one of the youngest show creators if LFE goes to series.

In addition to the two CBS medical drama pilots, NBC has Heart Matters, a medical soap pilot about a female heart-transplant surgeon, and is prepping Chicago MD, a medical drama planted spinoff from firefighter series Chicago Fire.

Additionally, ABC is nearing pilot order to a medical advocate drama.
