The Shades of Blue star's marigold Giambattista Valli gown and show-stopping red lip proved to be a winning combination at the 2016 Golden Globes. Below, the diva's makeup artist Mary Phillips breaks down how she created the custom lip shade.
"We wanted the makeup to be complementary without being matchy-matchy. A red lip would have been too predictable with the color of her dress and too literal, as the look was also a bit of a nod to Old Hollywood. A red lip would have been dated, costume-y."
"It was a mix of three L'Oreal gloss shades: a deep berry, dark brick red, and nude. I took a portion from each color family and applied it in a sort of 3D effect so it all blended together and looked seamless, not like a tie-dye of unblended color. I built up the lip in different areas, applying more concentrated colors that were darker to the outside of the mouth and then working my way in. We wanted the lips to be dark but not vampy, and also have dimension and not come across as a one-note color. This is a custom lip just for Jennifer. It gives a very full lip effect, while not being too wet or too matte at the same time. I used a lip liner, applied lipstick straight from the tube, with a brush and also with one of my fingers."
