Jaunt Launches ‘Jack White: Third-D’ Virtual Reality App

Virtual reality pioneer Jaunt has launched a virtual reality app featuring musician Jack White, “Jack White: THIRD-D.”

The new app lets viewers enjoy a 360-degree view of White as he performs “Freedom at 21″ and “Ball and Biscuit” at a Fenway Park concert, in addition to “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” from his performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

To view the footage in virtual reality, though, viewers will need a recent Android phone and a Google Cardboard viewer.

“We’re proud to be working with the infrastructure that Google has created,” said Scott Broock, Jaunt’s VP of content. “The cool thing about Cardboard is that it’s a scaffolding, a building block to create your own 3D experiences. We’ve layered on things that make our presentation of the stuff special, like a complete sound field that reacts to you turning around. We feel pretty lucky that we’re able to work with it. And for Jaunt, having a player that is essentially a portal to content existing within that ecosystem, we’re extremely happy about that.”

The release of “THIRD-D” coincides with Google’s announcement on Wednesday that it has launched a page in its app store dedicated to content that works with Cardboard. Google also reported that more than 500,000 Cardboard viewers have been shipped to users, indicating that the demand for VR viewers is growing.

Jaunt is currently developing the app for Samsung’s Gear VR and Oculus Rift, as well as a platform for iOS, which should arrive in early 2015.

White’s Jaunt debut comes on the heels of Paul McCartney’s footage of “Live and Let Die” from his Candlestick Park performance, which was the first VR clip of its kind by Jaunt.

The next Jaunt endeavor will be a presentation at Sundance’s New Frontier lab, a VR experience called “Kaiju Fury!” that will place viewers at ground level as they watch a massive Kaiju monster destroy a city, all in 360-degree, 3D virtual reality.
