J.R. Martinez Welcomes a Daughter — and, as Promised, He Did Not Name Her 'Salami'

Isn't it funny how when a celebrity selects a "normal" name for his or her new child it actually seems almost… unusual?

J.R. Martinez became a first-time father Wednesday evening when he and his girlfriend Diana Gonzalez-Jones welcomed a daughter. Their bundle of joy, named Lauryn Anabelle Martinez, was born in Los Angeles and weighed in at 7 lbs., 13 oz.

"It’s just amazing to see her, finally,” the 28-year-old "Dancing with the Stars" winner told People magazine. “She’s beautiful. She has a couple of cute little freckles on her cheeks, a full head of hair and the cutest little lips." And although her first name is Lauryn, “She’s already got a nickname — Belle,” said the proud dad.

Lauryn, meaning "the bay or laurel plant," is No. 501 on the Social Security Administration's Popular Name List. Its variant Lauren is even more widely used at No. 58. Annabelle is derived from the element arn (eagle) or arin (a hearth).

It's been a weird week for celebrity baby names with Jessica Simpson selecting Maxwell Drew for her daughter, two names that are largely thought of as male names, and then Levi Johnston announcing that his unborn baby girl will be named Breeze Beretta, a name he said that was inspired by "my favorite shotgun."

Martinez, an Iraq war veteran who got his start on the soap opera "All My Children," said soon after he announced his girlfriend was pregnant that their baby name was going to be special, not silly.

"We won't name her Apple Cider or Salami," he told People. "It won't be our favorite dish or our favorite getaway or favorite car or show. It will be something really close and personal to us that feels like we're giving something to her that is very special."

Mission accomplished.
