Heather Hicks Ervin, KoMut Entertainment Exec, Dead At 39
Heather Hicks Ervin, coordinating producer at David Kohan and Max Mutchnick’s KoMut Entertainment died unexpectedly Monday night, December 22, at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She was 39.
Ervin had worked with Kohan and Mutchnick for 12 years, beginning in 2002 as an executive assistant on the Emmy-winning comedy Will & Grace, which Kohan & Mutchnick co-created. Four years later, she was promoted to coordinating producer of their KoMut Entertainment, where she worked on creative and production affairs for the company’s pilots and series, including the upcoming Buzzy’s, debuting in 2015 on TBS.
Just last June, Ervin was tapped to serve as a development exec for Mutchnick’s Too Much Ink, as she continued to maintain her responsibilities at KoMut. (Kohan and Mutchick recently began pursuing their own development in addition to their joint projects.) She worked with Mutchnick on creative affairs for the new company, the first project from which is a single-camera comedy at HBO, Quick Shots Of False Hope, based upon the Laura Kightlinger book.
“We are heartsick at the loss of Heather Hicks Ervin,” Kohan and Mutchnick said in a joint statement. “We’ve lost so much more than the woman who ran the daily operations of our company for the last 12 years. We lost a surrogate mother, a moral compass, a joyous presence, a sharp and organized thinker, a drinking buddy, a truly funny person, and a deeply kind, deeply loving soul. Our hearts go out to her husband, Jason, and her two beautiful boys, Matthew and James. For those who knew this remarkable woman, the impact of the loss cannot be overstated. We send our heartfelt condolences to Heather’s family and loved ones, and our deepest gratitude to Heather herself for sharing her beautiful spirit with us, though it was all too brief.”
Earlier in her career, Ervin was with Viacom Entertainment, serving as an executive assistant to then-VH1 President John Sykes. She later joined MTV as a manager in production events.
Ervin is survived by her husband, Jason Ervin, and sons Matthew (2 years and 10 months of age) and James (10 months).
A funeral will take place in upstate New York on Saturday, December 27, 2014, from 4:00–6:00 p.m. at the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route 9 in Clifton Park, NY 12065. A Los Angeles memorial to celebrate Ervin’s life will take place Thursday, January 8, 2015, at the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank.
