HBO Launches in Spain, Adds Content from Disney, Nickelodeon
MADRID – HBO España, HBO’s video streaming service for Spain, launched on Monday, offering not only its most popular shows such as “Game of Thrones” but also content from renowned providers such as Disney and Nickelodeon.
The HBO content in Spain, which includes completed seasons of original HBO productions, is available on site hboespaña.com and via Vodafone TV, the dedicated TV service by Vodafone, under the exclusive carriage deal inked by HBO with the Spanish telco last May.
Subscription to HBO España will cost €7.99 ($8.45) per month in Spain, with a one-month free trial for new subscribers. The new SVOD service will include dubbed and subtitled content. Each subscriber can register five different devices.
Telefonica’s Movistar Plus, Netflix and Rakuten’s Wuaki TV already operate in Spain’s still-fledgling SVOD market.
According to HBO, HBO España will offer a large number of titles released simultaneously with their debut in the U.S. In all, Spanish clients will have access to more than 3,000 hours of content in HD quality, ranging from original series such as “Game of Thrones,” “Westworld,” “Veep” and “Silicon Valley”; modern classics such as “Sex in the City,” “The Sopranos” and “The Wire”; and titles from third-party providers, such as The CW’s “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” Fox’s “The Exorcist” and AMC’s “Preacher.”
From Disney and Nickelodeon, HBO will offer feature films, documentaries and family-oriented programming.
HBO has also reached TV deals with Spain’s top fiction programming providers to access hit primetime dramas such as Mediaset España’s “El Principe,” Atresmedia’s “Velvet” and pubcaster RTVE’s “Isabel.” It’s also inked SVOD Spanish rights to international, local and indie films.
Originally announced last January by HBO CEO Richard Plepler, HBO España makes Spain the 19th European country where the premium streaming service operates. The service will also be accessible on Apple TV and Google Chromecast apart from PC, Mac and mobile devices with iOS and Android.
