eOne Acquires Phase 4 Films; Sets Berry Meyerowitz To Run U.S. Distribution

Canadian giant eOne is looking to strengthen its VOD, digital and home entertainment strategies in the U.S. with the acquisition of Phase 4 Films. As part of the deal, eOne has placed Phase 4 president and CEO Berry Meyerowitz at the helm of its U.S. film and distribution business. Sean Monson and David Richardson are also joining eOne from Phase 4. The moves come 18 months after eOne acquired rival Alliance, and just a month after word that eOne North American Films president David Reckziegel is leaving the company. Meyerowitz will oversee all aspects of film distribution in the U.S. as well as the company’s North American label and kids and family content distribution businesses. He founded the Toronto-based Phase 4 in 2009. Its purview has been to handle film, TV and special interest content across all media in North America with a focus on home entertainment, cable, telecommunications, satellite and digital platforms. In Cannes last month, it acquired writer-director Allison Burnett’s Ask Me Anything, and the Claudia Myers-directed drama Fort Bliss. EOne now plans to actively go after films that fit the platform release model. “We are delighted to welcome Berry and the talented Phase 4 team to eOne,” said Patrice Théroux, who oversees eOne’s global film business. “Phase 4 has been first at the table for key on-demand partnerships in the U.S. and they have a proven track record of success. Their expertise will greatly extend our abilities in the U.S. while also complementing our Canadian offering.” The deal also includes kaboom! Entertainment, Phase 4’s dedicated kids and family label.
