‘Duck Dynasty’ Controversy A Nice Present – For Series’ Christmas Album Sales
Duck The Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas sold 132,000 units for the week of December 22, a 22% increase compared with the week before, according to Nielsen SoundScan numbers out today (via our pal Variety). The week of December 22 also happens to be the first full week since the hit A&E Network series’ patriarch Phil Robertson was suspended for making pointed comments on homosexuality and race in a GQ magazine article. So much for consumer backlash, it seems, after A&E’s decision announced the afternoon of December 18 resulted in a conservative Christian group hitting 210,000 signatures and counting on its petition demanding A&E reinstate Robertson, one retailer reversing its decision to yank Duck Dynasty products off its shelves because of customer blowback, and a big-box retailer couldn’t keep up with customer demand for series merchandise leading up to Christmas. The holiday album, from Capitol Nashville and which streeted October 29, is No. 4 on the current chart, behind only Beyonce’s new album, Garth Brooks and One Direction. How about that performance mashup on Grammy night?
