David Koechner Releases Instagram Movie (15 Seconds at a Time)

Movies may be getting longer and longer at the box office, but that’s not the case on Instagram.

David Koechner (“Anchorman,” The Office”) and friend Harland Williams (“Dumb and Dumber”) have made the first “instamovie,” a short film on Instagram Video, the new 15-second clips available on the Facebook-owned photo-sharing app.

Koechner released the movie, called “Steady and Shakes,” on his Instagram account Sunday in eight 15-second parts, the entire movie clocking in at two minutes. The buddy-cop omdcy stars Koechner as Steady, a cool and collected though incapable cop, and Williams as his trembling sidekick, Shakes. It chronicles their well-intentioned yet fruitless efforts of policing the neighborhood in slapstick fashion.

The production is about as low budget as possible, being shot at Koechner’s home one afternoon with iPhones and sound effects provided live with nearby phones and laptops. Koechner’s friends and neighbors served as extras.

The idea originated two years ago in a brainstorm with the two comedians, but was shelved until Instagram released their video feature one month ago, creating easy distribution.

Instagram released their video feature last month on the heels of the release of Twitter’s own six-second video vehicle, Vine. Koechner and Williams aren’t the first in entertainment to take advantage of either venue; most recently Open Road Studios released a new trailer for “Jobs” starring Ashton Kutcher via Instagram.

The conclusion of “Steady and Shakes” is slated to follow on Koechner’s Instagram account next month.
