Community Season 4: 6 Scoopy Bits Revealed!

Community Season 4: 6 Scoopy Bits Revealed!

You’d think that after nearly a year of continuous Community scoops — including a full feature with the show’s new bosses timed to its initial premiere date last October — our supply would have run dry.

You’d be wrong!

The cult fave NBC comedy finally launches its much-anticipated fourth season tonight at 8/7c, and we’ve still got some fresh new teases to throw your way — straight from the halls of Greendale, in fact.

Back in November, TVLine hit the Community set for one last visit before production wrapped. Here’s what Joel McHale, Jim Rash, Alison Brie, Yvette Nicole Brown and Gillian Jacobs had to say about dads, deans, dreams come true and everything else Season 4 has in store.

IT’S GUY LOVE, THAT’S ALL IT IS | Rash assured us that Dean Pelton is “still pining after Jeff” in a major way in Season 4. “The dean is much more aggressive this year as far as trying to push the line to see if [something with Jeff] will happen, which has been a joy,” he laughed. In fact, one instance in particular pushed both Rash and McHale over the edge. “One moment that I loved [this season] is when Jeff goes to his office and says, ‘Dean, I need you,’” McHale teased, with Rash adding: “And then I just go, ‘It’s happening…’”

DREAM TEAM | For Brown, “dreams came true” this season, because she and Donald Glover were finally given the chance to team up. “Donald and I have worked together probably four or five times already this season,” she divulged. “It’s been a lot, even just small, little conversations. But we’ve also had a full episode.”

LAW & ORDER PART DEUX | This season, Annie — who is going to suffer from a major case of senioritis – “ends up finding a new direction in forensics,” Brie revealed. “It kind of makes sense because it touches on things from past seasons, like the Law & Order episode — even though she was more the lawyer in that episode.”

HOLIDAY HOLD-UP | If it occurred to you that — given Community‘s long-postponed premiere — any holiday episodes would air way out of whack, you’d be correct. That said, the creative team behind the comedy tried its darnedest to acknowledge the scheduling issues with a wink and a nod in the upcoming installments. Brie explained that they learned about the February launch date while shooting the Christmas episode. “So we tried to work in a line that was like, ‘Yes, this is great in the house. Or it could also work for Valentine’s Day — or whenever people might see it.’ I hope that that line makes it in.” Added Jacobs, proudly: “It’s very Community, that somehow we’re going to be having a Halloween episode in March.”

NEW BLOOD | The following exchange between McHale and Rash regarding the addition of veteran actor Malcolm McDowell is just too good to break up. So here, for your reading pleasure, is a bit of improv at its finest:

McHale: Malcolm McDowell is tremendous. He plays our history professor and he sounds like he has a checkered past. He might not be the happiest person in the world…
Rash: A manic-depressive.
McHale: Yes, and I couldn’t believe I was shooting with him.
Rash: And I don’t think he could. Malcolm pulled me aside and said, ‘Is this the best Joel can do?
McHale: Wow. He pulled you aside and said that?
Rash: Yeah, he said, ‘Jim, you and I get each other because we’re classically trained actors.’
McHale: That’s funny because he said to me, ‘Why is Moby here?’
Rash: And then he said to me that that was just a bit to make you like him.
McHale: Really?! Cause he came to me and said, ‘I just called him Moby and he cried like a baby. I’m going to go call him Steven Soderbergh now!’
Rash: Smash cut to Malcolm and I working together now.
McHale: On what?
Rash: This movie. It’s Clockwork Orange 2.
McHale: Ummm, I feel like you’re making that up.
Rash: Maybe… Next question!

DADDY DEAREST | Also making a quick trip to Greendale in Season 4 is Mr. Barbara Streisand James Brolin, who, as previously reported, will play Jeff’s long-MIA father. “He took pity on us and accepted being on the show — and he was great,” McHale shared, adding with a laugh, “I don’t want to give out too many details, but… he dies.” In all seriousness, the actor had very high praise for Brolin. “He really nailed the part,” McHale noted. “You always hear people gushing about that stuff, but I really enjoyed him and I hope he’s back again.”
