Busy Philipps on 'Veronica Mars': Could a 'Freaks and Geeks' Campaign Be Next?

Regardless of your personal interest in "Veronica Mars," there's no question that this week's Kickstarter campaign for the movie -- which managed to hit its 30-day goal of raising $2 million in a matter of hours -- may change the landscape of the entertainment world and the ever-evolving role of the fans. If "Mars," which went off the air in 2007, could be resurrected, what shows are next?

Needless to say, the fans are ecstatic, but so are the actors … and not just the ones who appeared on the Kristen Bell starmaker. Busy Philipps, for one, is in awe about it.

"How amazing is that?! They're going to make a $20 million 'Veronica Mars' movie by the end of this thing. It's so cool," she gushed to Yahoo! TV while promoting Bacardi Classic Cocktails Light (which she hasn't been drinking lately since she's pregnant). "I think it's really awesome and it's such a testament to the power of how much people love their TV shows."

Since the 33-year-old starred in a cult series herself, we had to ask if she had any hopes of a similar chain of events for "Freaks and Geeks."

"It wasn't a group of fans that got together and demanded the 'Veronica Mars' movie … it was all the actors and the creators and the writers of the show that got together and did the Kickstarter," she explained "We'd have to have Judd Apatow, Paul Feig, and Jake Kasdan on board -- and I'm sure all of us [actors] would do it -- but those guys, it has to be their idea."

Social media, Philipps said, has really changed the game and has been a huge help in saving shows on the bubble.

"I remember when 'Freaks and Geeks' was definitely on the cusp and we all knew that the writing was on the wall," the actress recalled. "It was in the early days of social media and there was a fansite for 'Freaks and Geeks.' Some fans had gotten together and they bought a full-page ad in The Hollywood Reporter, and, while that gesture is so incredibly sweet, the online petitions and the Kickstarters and the stuff that's going on now online is so much more impactful because [networks] can actually see the numbers of people that are signing onto these petitions for shows."

And she's already been saved once, as "Cougar Town" was on the verge of cancellation when it changed networks and landed at TBS.

"That sort of grassroots effort [that included the actors throwing viewing parties in bars around the country] and the motivation of the fans online probably helped us get to TBS and helped us find our new home," she said.

So, if "Freaks and Geeks," which only had 18 episodes that began airing in 1999, were given a second life, would Busy come back to play tough girl from a broken home, Kim Kelly?

"Of course I would do it," she said. "I think 'Freaks and Geeks' 10 years later, the high school reunion, would be kind of incredible. It would be 1990, I guess. That would be pretty awesome … I want I want to see what happened to poor Kim Kelly. In my experience with those girls in high school -- and you know everyone knows that girl -- it always ends up that they work at a bank and they get married to some nice guy and they have kids. It's always the tough, hard girls. I don't think Kim Kelly ends up living in a trailer. I think she makes a better life for herself than her parents made for her and she's trying to do best."

Lastly, Philipps confessed that she's right there in your boat when it comes to shows coming to an end.

"I'm a fan of shows. I get bummed when my shows get cancelled," she said. "I would be devastated if 'Enlightened' was canned."
